The Federal Government has launched its $500 million Housing Support Program, inviting applications from councils and state governments to boost housing supply.

Stream 1 targets enhancing planning efficiency, including workforce development and system streamlining. Projects must demonstrate how they align with planning, zoning and regulatory reforms agreed through the National Cabinet’s National Planning Reform Blueprint, land-use planning for disaster resilience and the aims of the National Housing Accord.

Minister Catherine King highlights the program's role in expediting home construction, King said, “Strengthening planning capability through the program will help kick-start housing supply from local, state and territory governments.”

While Minister Julie Collins placed emphasis on addressing housing challenges. “I urge all councils and state and territory governments to submit their projects so we can work together to get more homes on the ground, faster,” Minister Collins said.

The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) has welcomed the opening of applications and release of guidelines for the program. ALGA President Linda Scott urges councils to tap into the program, advocating for increased funding to enhance infrastructure and community amenities, underscoring the need for quality, energy-efficient housing. Working side-by-side with councils is in Procurement Australia's roots. We began our journey on the back of the City of Melbourne’s establishment of a buying group for 14 Melbourne municipal councils. Nearly 40 years on, we still adopt a member-led approach, so if you have an idea for a project but need a procurement perspective, become a member and let’s collaborate.
