Rio Tinto signs deal with Aboriginal group to develop green power

Rio Tinto, responsible for 1% of global emissions, has made an initial agreement with the Yindjibarndi people and Philippines' ACEN for a venture into sustainable energy. In line with Rio Tinto's $3 billion plan to clean up its iron ore operations, the project in Western Australia's Pilbara region aims to set up a 75-100 megawatt solar array. Simon Trott, Rio Tinto's iron ore division chief, noted, "This arrangement would see renewable power from Yindjibarndi connecting to our private network." 

The positive impact of this collaboration goes beyond just generating energy. Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation (YAC) can now consider cultural heritage sites, river systems, and other important spots when choosing renewable sites, according to YAC CEO Michael Woodley. 

In an area where Indigenous groups are often sidelined in significant projects, this is a welcome change. Rio Tinto's past actions, including damaging sacred rock shelters at Juukan Gorge three years ago, highlight the need for a more inclusive approach. 

"It’s about respectfully using Yindjibarndi country, providing green electrons to the community, to Rio Tinto, to other businesses – mainly to help out with Pilbara's decarbonisation and electrification," explained Yindjibarndi Energy CEO Craig Ricato.
