Lawyers from across Slater and Gordon will team up in a charity AFL footy match which sees barristers and solicitors play off against each other to raise funds for disadvantaged Australians.
The Frank Galbally Cup will raise funds for Reclink’s Indigenous program in Alice Springs, which provides lifechanging programs to Indigenous Australians in the Northern Territory.
Reclink Australia provides sport and art programs to disadvantaged Australians to create socially inclusive, life-changing opportunities.
The organising committee is urging lawyers, barristers and other legal professionals from all firms across Melbourne to register for the game to be held on Sunday, 6 October 2019.
Slaters’ Associate Hannah Lewis, who is on the committee, said: “The Galbally Cup is an opportunity for us all to come together to show solidarity with the most vulnerable in the community.”
“A simple game of footy between peers and colleagues will enable those in disadvantaged communities to do the same, all while promoting social inclusion and creating pathways for improved health, education and employment,” Ms Lewis said.
While the match has traditionally been played only by men, this is the second year the Galbally Cup has been open to women players.
Lawyer Bridie Walsh was the first woman to play in the charity match.
“This year is very different; the Galbally Cup has been opened to all genders and the organising committee is proactively recruiting everyone to join in the fun,” Ms Walsh said.
“Legal traditions like the Galbally Cup provide an opportunity for everyone in the profession to network with other legal practitioners in an informal environment.”
